Player of the Week: Kyra Ward, Chelmsford Volleyball

Kyra Ward

Chelmsford volleyball standout Kyra Ward has been selected as the Valley Sports Daily Female Player of the Week, presented by MTM Insurance, for the week of Oct. 25-31.

Last week, the senior outside hitter had 68 kills, 56 digs, 19 aces and seven assists to lead her team to 3-2 wins over Needham, Westford Academy and Franklin. She was a force in all three victories and is a huge reason that co-MVC I champion Chelmsford sits at 19-1 for the season.

“Kyra is a great player and she has had a tremendous season and career at CHS,” said Lions head coach Edgar Valdez. “She is a complete player and can do a little bit of everything from serving, passing, hitting and setting, but it’s her competitiveness and leadership on the court and in the huddle that truly helps push our team to victory.”

Ward added, “I’m so proud of how our girls are played this week. We practice hard every day; to see that our efforts are paying off is truly a great feeling. With playoffs coming up, our team is more ready to compete than ever, especially with the abrupt finish in playoffs last season. We want it more than ever, and I can’t wait to see what our future matches hold.”

The Player of the Week, presented by MTM Insurance, is selected by the Valley Sports Daily staff. One male and one female student-athlete will be selected as Players of the Week throughout the year. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at 8 p.m. There may be a poll posted on Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selections but do not strictly dictate the decisions.

Kyra Ward earned Valley Sports Daily Female Player of the Week honors for Oct. 25-31 after an outstanding stretch for Chelmsford girls volleyball. The senior outside hitter helped the Lions secure three consecutive five-set victories against Needham, Westford Academy and Franklin.

Across those three matches, Kyra Ward recorded 68 kills, 56 digs, 19 aces and seven assists. Her all-around performance helped Chelmsford finish the regular season with a 19-1 record and a share of the Merrimack Valley Conference I championship.

Chelmsford head coach Edgar Valdez praised Kyra Ward for her versatility, competitiveness and leadership. In addition to her offensive production, Ward contributed in serving, passing and setting while helping the Lions navigate three closely contested nonleague matches.

With the MIAA state tournament approaching, Kyra Ward and Chelmsford carried momentum from three straight victories into postseason competition. The Lions’ successful regular season included an MVC I co-championship and just one loss in 20 matches.
