Methuen/Tewksbury eighth-grade swimmer Weston Sawicki has been selected as the Valley Sports Daily Male Player of the Week, presented by MTM Insurance, for the week of Sept. 20-26.
Sawicki earned his first two career victories in the 50 and 500 freestyle in a convincing team win over Central Catholic after turning in a strong performance on Sept. 15 with a pair of runner-up finishers.
“Weston has done a nice job so far this season. He has a competitive swim background and is very versatile, so we are able to put him all over the lineup, which is huge especially for someone so young,” said Methuen/Tewksbury coach Jason Smith. “You wouldn’t know that he is in eighth grade when you look at him compete and interact positively with his high school teammates.”
The Methuen resident says he’s felt comfortable right from the start around his older veteran teammates from both communities.
“I like how supportive our teammates are and how we are always the loudest team,” said Sawicki. “It motivates me to swim faster and helps me feel more included in the team.”
With his squad sitting atop the MVC 2 standings, Smith added, “Weston has earned us some big points already, and we were proud to see him get his first two individual wins. There are many more where those came from.”
The Player of the Week, presented by MTM Insurance, is selected by the Valley Sports Daily staff. One male and one female student-athlete will be selected as Players of the Week throughout the year. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at 8 p.m. There may be a poll posted on Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selections but do not strictly dictate the decisions.
