Billerica senior Cam Amenkowicz has been selected as the Valley Sports Daily Player of the Week, presented by MTM Insurance, for May 25 through May 31. Amenkowicz is the ninth student-athlete chosen as Player of the Week for the spring season.
Amenkowicz tossed a gem in No. 28 Billerica’s massive first-round upset over No. 5 Bishop Stang over the weekend, catapulting the Indians to the Division 2 round of 16 with a dominant performance on the mound. The senior threw a complete game shutout in the 3-0 win and totaled nine strikeouts to keep a high-powered offense at bay on the big stage.
“Cam was dominant against Bishop Stang shutting down the number 5 seed,” said Billerica head coach Mike Waters. “He had a complete game shutout and had 9 strikeouts. Cam has always looked forward to pitching in the biggest games possible for us and is never afraid to take the ball.”
Amenkowicz compiled 35 strikeouts in 28.2 innings pitched in the regular season and saved his best stuff for the state tournament. He was also a top hitter in the Merrimack Valley Conference, slashing .348. The Indians will take on No. 12 North Attleboro on Wednesday at Community School Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Billerica was a winner over No. 37 Somerville in the preliminary round.
