His courage was an inspiration to every team, player, and coach around the rinks last winter.
Dave O’Hearn, the Methuen/Tewksbury girls hockey head coach, lost his battle with cancer last week at the age of 48. Even while receiving treatment all season for pancreatic cancer, O’Hearn stayed behind the bench for his team.
His fortitude left a lasting impression on every team that encountered the Red Rangers all season.
Methuen/Tewksbury was yet again one of the best teams in the state, turning in a 19-2-3 record that yielded the program’s first MVC/DCL league crown since 2019. The team fell in the Division 1 Final Four and was one win away from a trip to the TD Garden.
O’Hearn became the interim head coach for the 2022-23 season before that tag was lifted the following year. In three seasons at the helm, he compiled an impressive 47-13-7 record in perhaps one of the toughest leagues in the state. He was an assistant when the Red Rangers won the state title in 2019 in their second consecutive appearance in the final on Causeway Street.
O‘Hearn graduated from Methuen High in 1995 and is enshrined in the school’s athletic hall of fame as a star hockey player.
