Central Catholic junior Gianna Bonanno has been selected as the Valley Sports Daily Girls Player of the Week for Oct. 6 through Oct. 12. Bonanno is the third student-athlete chosen as Girls Player of the Week for the 2025-26 school year, which is presented on a weekly basis.
Bonanno has been stellar between the pipes for the Raiders (5-8-1) as of late, highlighted by her eye-popping 25-save effort in the team’s 2-1 win over Chelmsford. Bonanno followed that epic performance up with a three-save effort in a win against Westford Academy and a 12-save outburst in a loss to non-league opponent Wachusett.
“Gianna has been the back up varsity goalie for two years and seeing her take the lead role has been awesome,” said Central Catholic head coach Josselyn Wilson. “She has grown into a confident and competitive team mate and is always super vocal for the girls – yelling out who to cover, or when to drop, pumping them up on defensive corners, or encouraging while on attack. We’ve seen a lot of play in our defensive end this season and she’s seen a lot of shots and has kept us in a lot of games – her best one all season was last week vs Chelmsford where she had 25 saves and we got the win. She was stepping up and took control of her circle. It was fun to watch.”
The Player of the Week is selected by the Valley Sports Daily staff. Nominations can be submitted throughout the week up until Saturday night at 8:00 PM. There may be a poll posted on Sunday with the nominations. The results of the poll influence the selection but do not strictly dictate the decision.
